Training

Working in an Inter-agency and Multi Agency way requires training that supports people to work effectively with practitioners from a wide range of agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Halton Children & Young People Safeguarding Partnership provides a range of courses for staff working with children, young people and families, or with adults who may be parents or carers.

Halton Children & Young People Safeguarding Partnership’s Multi-Agency Training Strategy outlines the Partnership’s strategic vision and priorities around training.

Charging Policy

Halton Children & Young People safeguarding Partnership training is free to organisations that make a financial contribution of at least 15% to the Partnership’s budget and to not for profit and Voluntary Sector organisations with a national turnover of less than £100,000 per annum.

All other organisations will be expected to pay a fee per person, per day or part of. Charges for late cancellation and non-attendance also apply. The HCYPSP Charging Policy includes details of fees and the cancellation process.

Online e-learning Training Courses (links may take you to external websites):

St Giles Trust: St Giles helps vulnerable young people who are criminally exploited through gangs, serious violence and offending.
Fearless.org: Fearless is a site where young people can access non-judgemental information and advice about crime and criminality. There is a section of the website is aimed at professionals working with young people. You can access educational resources, further information on different crime types and find out more about the work being done nationally to educate and encourage young people to speak out about crime.
Basic Awareness in Safeguarding Children and Adults Please note it does not offer local policy and procedure or contacts. Therefore, any organisations using this as a level 2 course should ensure staff are made aware of their own agency’s policies & procedures as well as local Halton procedures and contact details (Halton Borough Council’s E –Learning account).
Safeguarding Disabled Children and Young People This session will describe why disabled children and young people are vulnerable to abuse, explore how to respond where abuse is suspected and offer guidance on how to build the resilience of disabled children and young people and their families
Child Sexual Exploitation Although the course is aimed at parents, safeguarding professionals will also find course a valuable source of information to: find out more about child sexual exploitation; learn the signs and indicators of when a child might be being exploited; understand the impact child sexual exploitation can have on families and know what to do if you suspect a child might be at risk of this abuse (PACE interactive CSE learning tool).
Brook Child Sexual Exploitation has been designed for use by all staff in healthcare settings – from doctors and nurses to receptionists, paramedics, and pharmacists. Developed by Brook and funded by the Department of Health, the tool is designed to help healthcare staff in preventing, identifying and responding to child sexual exploitation
The Children’s Society work directly with young people, developing resources and delivering training to other professionals who work with children – from young carers to those at risk of being exploited, abused, neglected Information for professionals | The Children’s Society (childrenssociety.org.uk)
Domestic Abuse a range of e-learning courses on domestic abuse
Parental Substance Misuse explores parental substance misuse, its effects on children and parenting capacity and the implications for social work practitioners. This e-learning resource is targeted at children’s social care workers to help them work more confidently with families where parents are misusing drugs. These resources might also be useful for primary care services staff (GPs, Health Visitors, Midwives), Children’s Centre staff and students
Forced Marriage This course has been developed with the Forced Marriage Unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Home Office. It aims to raise awareness, challenge perceptions and inform you of the correct actions to take should you suspect someone is at risk. The course will show you how to recognise the warning signs of forced marriage; take the right actions to help protect the potential victim and co-operate effectively with other agencies

Human Trafficking a basic awareness in human trafficking, the causes which drive it and the effects on human lives
Safeguarding Child Victims of Trafficking safeguarding children to increase awareness and highlight the specific support needs of trafficked children
Female Genital Mutilation The training will help a wide range of professionals to identify and assist girls who are at risk of FGM. This course is useful for anyone who is interested in gaining an overview of FGM
Radicalisation Explains how Channel links to the Government’s counter terrorism strategy and describes the Channel process and its purpose and identifies factors that can help make people vulnerable to radicalisation
Prevent This offers an introduction to the Prevent duty and explains how it aims to safeguard vulnerable people from being radicalised and to support terrorism or become involved in terrorism
Child and Adolescent Mental Health MindEd has e-learning courses on Self-Harm & Risky Behaviour; Bullying & the impact on the child; Introducing Child Development and Flashbacks, Trauma & Bullying
Suicide The training will teach you how to recognise the warning signs and safeguard someone that could be contemplating suicide
Attachment Theory Understanding the basic principles of attachment theory and its importance for practice
Caring for Vulnerable Children Develop an understanding of some of the approaches involved in caring for vulnerable children
Children and Young People’s Participation Children and young people’s participation, emphasises that the adoption of an integrated approach to participation by different sectors of the children’s workforce is of crucial importance. The course defines the complexity of participation for children and young people; compare and contrast different cultural perspectives and experiences of participation and reflect critically on personal professional practice and assumptions regarding participation

Safeguarding Children Induction Booklet

The Safeguarding Children Induction Booklet Safeguarding Children Induction Booklet has been designed to support new staff working with children and families. It should be used as part of all staff inductions, including volunteers, to ensure that basic information about safeguarding children in Halton is relayed to the practitioner at the earliest opportunity. This is a foundation booklet to be used by Multi Agencies in conjunction to their local policy/ procedures. Managers/Supervisors should discuss the booklet during supervision to support the practitioners understanding. Please note this booklet is not an e-learning tool and DOES NOT replace the need for Basic Awareness Safeguarding Training to be provided to all staff who work with children and families.
